The Election Commission on Saturday has announced the dates for the upcoming Assembly polls for Haryana and Maharashtra. Polling on the 90 seats of Haryana will take place on October 21 and counting will take place on October 24. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) also announced the dates for Maharashtra state polls, which is scheduled along with Haryana's on October 21. Apart from the state polls, bypolls for 64 seats across the various states will also be held, announced the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora. The term of Haryana assembly expires on November 2, while that of Maharashtra assembly ends on November 9.

Here is the full schedule for Haryana assembly elections:

  • Gazette Notification to be issued: September 27.

  • Last date of nominations: October 4.

  • Date for Scrutiny of Nomination - October 5

  • Last Date for Withdrawal of Candidatures - October 7

  • Polling on all 90 seats: October 21

  • Results of the elections: October 24

  • Conclusion of elections: October 27

CEC announces the Poll expense limit and verifies poll-preparedness

Announcing the poll expense for the state elections, the CEC set the cap as Rs 28-lakh for each candidate in both the states. CEC Arora also emphasized on the use of environment-friendly materials for campaigning. "There is a Rs 28 lakh-cap on poll expense on each candidate. We appeal the candidates to use environment-friendly materials. We reassure all the stakeholders about the quality of electronic voting machines," Arora said.

On the poll preparedness of the states, he added: "Both Haryana and Maharashtra are sound-fitting in terms of poll preparation. All types are arrangements are being made for the voters. Candidates will require to fill all the columns in their poll form. The Election Commission is privileged to play a role in democracy."

BJP, Congress begins poll-campaign

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched BJP's poll campaign for the state. The Prime Minister said that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has “mammoth support” and that it shows “direction of the wind”. The PM said he is confident of victory as the people of the state have always given full support to the BJP. The Prime Minister kicked off the BJP’s campaign in Rohtak. On the other side, Congress has constituted a new state Congress team, led by PCC chief Kumari Selja and CLP leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The Congress’ campaign is likely to focus on the agrarian crisis and the economic slowdown in Haryana’s industrial and auto hubs.
