The results of the Haryana's 90-seat Assembly which went to polls on October 21 will be declared on Thursday. With BJP CM Manohar Lal Khattar eyeing a second term, the main opposition to the saffron party is Congress which is eyeing to stop BJP's ever-expanding base in the states across India. Another minor party in the battle is the once strong Chautala clan's JJP and INLD.

Polling on October 21:

With over  1.83 crore voters, including 85 lakh women and 252 transgenders, 19,578 polling stations had been set up on October 21. The final turnout in the state was recorded as 65%. The polling also saw former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda displaying his callous behaviour by breaking the queue to cast his vote. Hooda could be seen pushing women and elderly people aside to make his way to the polling booth. Other major athletes-cum-politicians like Babit Phogat, Sushil Kumar also were spotted voting.

Political scenario in Haryana

In Haryana,  the Congress is hoping to make a comeback following a change in guard in the state, while the BJP led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has set a target of winning 75 seats out of 90 in which 1,169 candidates of various political outfits are contesting. Currently, the BJP has 48 members in the state assembly and had won all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the recent election. The Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), a breakaway faction of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), is also hoping for an improvement in its prospects following the Lok Sabha debacle. The party had emerged on the scene following a feud in the Chautala clan in December last year.

The BSP, AAP, INLD-SAD combine, Swaraj India and the Loktantra Suraksha Party (LSP) have thrown their hat into the ring, though none of them is fighting on all 90 seats. Prominent amongst those in the contest are Chief Minister Khattar (Karnal), former chief minister and Congress Legislative Party leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda (Garhi Sampla-Kiloi), Randeep Singh Surjewala (Kaithal), Kiran Choudhary (Tosham) and Kuldeep Bishnoi (Adampur) and JJP's Dushyant Chautala (Uchana Kalan). The BJP has fielded three sportspersons -- Babita Phogat (Dadri), Yogeshwar Dutt (Baroda in Sonipat) and Sandeep Singh (Pehowa) -- besides TikTok star Sonali Phogat (Adampur).

In the 2014 assembly polls, the BJP for the first time came to power in Haryana winning 47 seats. It won the Jind bypolls earlier this year, taking its total strength in the state assembly to 48. The INLD had 19 MLAs while the Congress has 17 legislators. The BSP and the SAD had bagged one seat each in the last polls while five were Independents.

Key poll-factors in Haryana:

The biggest disadvantage for Congress in the state is the recent resignation of former Haryana chief Ashok Tanwar amid reports of a tussle with former CM Bhupinder Hooda. Rahul Gandhi's sudden trip to Bangkok amid poll season too added to the confusion, to an already depleted Opposition. Matters did not help when senior leaders - Bhupinder Hooda, Ahmed Patel, and Ghulam Nabi Azad were caught on camera moaning that the party would barely win 10-12 seats.

On the other hand, Manohar Lal Khattar and PM Narendra Modi's pro-development politics have aided the BJP's chances. The push towards nationalism through abrogation of Article 370, implementation of NRC and other developmental schemes have helped the saffron party in the state. With strong support for the current Khattar government and a decimated Chautala clan, the battle in Haryana is close.
