The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) on Monday expressed displeasure over the inaction of the Delhi police in arresting its personnel who allegedly opened fire at a lawyer during the clashes at the Tis Hazari court on November 2. In a statement, BCD chairman KC Mittal observed that the police were provoking lawyers to continue their protest. Revealing that the meeting with the police and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal had failed, he reiterated the BCD’s solidarity with the advocates.

The statement read, "No concrete step has been taken to arrest the police persons who fired at advocates. The police are adamant, rather provoking lawyers, to resort to protest. We unitedly stand with the legal fraternity.” Mittal added, “The meeting with LG and police failed due to resistance of police officials and failure to act as per law. They had no intention to take action against ASIs involved in firing at Tis Hazari.”

Talks remain inconclusive

Earlier, on Sunday, a meeting was held between members of all district courts’ associations, Delhi police representatives and Baijal. The talks remained inconclusive as the Delhi police stated that it would initiate action against its personnel only after the inquiry report. On the other hand, Baijal urged both sides to continue talks and resolve their differences in an amicable manner. However, the protesting lawyers decided to abstain from work on Monday.

Lawyers-police conflict

The tussle between the lawyers and the police in Delhi has been going on since the clashes outside the Tis Hazari court on November 2 when a dispute broke out over a parking spot. On October 3, the Delhi High Court ordered a judicial inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the clashes between the police and lawyers outside the Tis Hazari court. Thereafter, hundreds of police officials staged a protest at the Police Headquarters in the national capital owing to incidents of police personnel being assaulted by some lawyers.
