BSF Jawan killed by Bangladesh Border Guards: Here's what happened

A Border Security Force (BSF) Jawan was killed and another injured on Thursday after a Bangladeshi Border Guard fired from his AK-47 rifle during a 'flag meeting' along the International border of the two countries near West Bengal.

Here's exactly what transpired:

On Thursday morning, three fishermen went out in the river for fishing in river Padma, which flows close to the India and Bangladesh border. Two fishermen later came back and approached the Border Security Force post Kakmarichar and told them that the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) had arrested them, but later release two of the fishermen so that they could call the BSF Post Commander for a flag meeting. The BSF Commander, along with five troopers, later approached the BGB patrol in the water channel of River Padma near Boundary Pillar 75/7-S. 

In the Flag meeting, the Bangladesh guards did not release the fisherman and instead started surrounding the Indian BSF Jawans. The BSF Jawans sensed that the situation was only worsening and hence they decided to return back to their Check Post. The Bangladeshi officials, for reasons unknown, fired at the returning BSF Jawans. Head constable Vijay Bhan Singh received bullet injuries on his head and another constable received bullets on his right hand.

Fatal injuries

Both of them were immediately taken to the nearest medical facility for treatments. Head constable Singh succumbed to injuries and was declared dead upon his arrival at the facility. The other constable was then taken to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital in Baharampur. 

The BSF Chief V K Johri called up his counterpart Major General Shafeenul Islam over a hotline, who assured a thorough probe of the incident. The incident has rung an alarm in the top security establishment in New Delhi with the Union Home Ministry and Ministry of External Affairs being briefed by the BSF.
