Delhi Police: 'Lawyers forcefully entered Lock-Up manhalded officers'

A sudden scuffle broke out between the lawyers and the police at the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi on Saturday. DCP Singh commented on the scuffle outside the court

A sudden scuffle broke out between the lawyers and the police at the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi on Saturday. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Harender Singh commented on the scuffle between the Delhi police and lawyers at Tis Hazari Court and said, the scuffle was only over parking, between jawans of 3rd Battalion and lawyers. Some other lawyers joined too, they wanted to enter inside the lockup as they sought revenge.

Lawyers set ablaze 2-3 bikes in a bid to open the gate in their explosion

DCP Singh further added that they set ablaze 2-3 bikes in a bid to open the gate in their explosion. But the police began dousing the fire with the help of drinking water inside but the smoke caused suffocation inside and due to this they had to make a human chain and shifted all the prisoners to a different lockup. The DCP further stated that by being inside we tried to save the lives of not only police personnel but prisoners also. DCP Singh stated that the members of the police force sustained injuries too. 
In a statement, the Delhi Police on Saturday said, "In protest, a large number of advocates of the Tis Hazari Court assembled near Lock-Up. The CCTV footage examined so far has shown that lawyers forcefully entered the Lock-Up and started manhandling the police officials on duty."

Police vehicles set ablaze 

The Delhi Police said that the senior officials who were trying to counsel the advocates were beaten mercilessly. "Further, they also set on fire some police vehicles. When they stormed the police lockup, for the safety of under trial prisoners and in self-defence police has to resort to firing aiming in the air," the statement further read. "The circumstances of the gunshot injury to the lawyer are being further investigated with the help of the CFSL team," the Delhi Police said. An investigation has been ordered into the incident which took place at Tis Hazari. The Delhi Police has handed over the investigation to the SIT crime branch.

Lawyers beat up a journalist

A journalist was also hit by lawyers at Tis Hazari Court. The incident occurred while the journalist was covering the scuffle between lawyers and Delhi Police, reports state. The journalists present at the spot was being stopped by lawyers from covering the incident and their mobile phones were being snatched.
