"Dress properly" says RTO official denying Chennai woman driving test

Even though there is no dress code for driving licence applicants, a Chennai-based woman was asked to "dress properly" by an RTO official to take the test

A Chennai-based woman, working with a software firm was allegedly asked to wear appropriate clothes by an RTO official during a driving licence test. According to reports, the woman, who went to an RTO office in KK Nagar wearing a pair of jeans and a casual sleeveless top, was asked to go home and come back dressed properly. 

Even men in lungi, shorts are denied the test 

When asked the reson behind denying the driving test, the official explained that since it is a government office different kinds of people from different strata of the society visit it. Thus, people must dress decently as they would while going to their own office, he told a news agency.

The woman had to go home and come back wearing a salwar-suit. It was only after that she was allowed to take a driving test. And the dress code is not applicable only to women. Men who had come for the test wearing lungi or shorts were also returned. "Whether it is men or women, the general advice is to come in a proper dress. It is not moral policing. Different kinds of people will come to RTO daily. In order to avoid any untoward incident, the applicants are advised to come in proper dress. Men who are in lungi, shorts are asked to come in proper attire," the official was quoted as saying.

What;s wrong, asks the official 

Even though there is no dress code for applicants, people are advised to come "dressed properly", said an RTO official. “What is wrong in asking people who come here to be attired properly as they would while going to their own office,” he asked. In a similar incident, another woman wearing a 'mukka pant' or capri was asked to come decently dressed, added the official.

Such incidents are not new in the city RTOs as a similar incident was reported in 2018.
