JP Nadda on Jethmalani: He was a legend of bar and inspired lawyers

BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda said that passing away of veteran lawyer and former Union Law Minister Ram Jethmalani is an irreplacable loss to the society.

BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda, while reacting to the death of veteran lawyer and former Union Law Minister Ram Jethmalani, said that Jethmalani’s passing away is an irreplaceable loss to the society. In his tweet, while expressing his condolences to Jethmalani’s family, he also said that Jethmalani was a legend of bar and an inspiration to many lawyers. He also said that the world will miss his knowledge and experience.

Passed away just six days before the birthday

Jethmalani passed away, just six days before his 96th birthday. He breathed his last at 7:45 am on August 8, at his residence in New Delhi. According to his son Mahesh Jethmalani, his father was unwell recently. He also said that the last rites would be performed on Sunday evening at the Lodhi Road crematorium.

Known for famous cases

A leading criminal lawyer, Jethmalani, was one of the highest-paid and most sought after lawyers in the country, had a career full of high-profile cases. He fought his very first case at the age of 17 and his career span also included the famous KM Nanavati versus State of Maharashtra case in 1959. He has been part of many landmark cases subsequently.

He is survived by his son, who is also a lawyer and a daughter. His other daughter passed away in 2011. His passing away comes as a huge setback to the country. Many prominent political leaders paid their tributes to Jethmalani. A senior lawyer Indira Jaising said that it is a huge loss to the legal fraternity and that she doubts there will be anyone like him again.

Congress leader and Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi said that the nation has lost an institution. While calling him courageous, he also said that Singhvi knew him since a long time and that he never hesitated to 'call spade a spade' in Rajya Sabha.
