Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha for Jammu and Kashmir, Fayaz Ahmad Mir on Monday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding mortal remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat who are buried in Tihar jail.

"In the remote village of Seerjageer, Sopore lies a tombstone of Mohammed Afzal Guru, without his mortal remains, standing there awaiting the magnanimity of this country, that may one day find it right to return Afzal Guru’s body to his family which lies buried in a corner in Tihar jail", the letter reads which was dated February, 11, 2019.

Citing a letter that was written by Mufti Mohammed Saeed to the then PM Dr Manmohan Singh, he said that 'my party and I, wholeheartedly resonate with that sentiment capital punishment, by all means, is an unconstitutional measure and has been called out for its huddled and secretive manner by almost all ideological groups in the country'.

"Our late Patron, Mufti Mohammed Saeed, vide his letter dated February 26, 2013 had written to the then PM Mr. Manmohan Singh ji, vehemently arguing the need to return the mortal remains of Afzal Guru to his family. In his considered opinion, Mufti Saab had highlighted the importance of this step in that it would not only reduce the pain of Guru’s family but also open the way for some rebuilding of bridges at the psychological level between Kashmir and rest of the country", Mr Mir wrote in his letter.

WATCH | PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti Backs Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid In JNU Sedition Case, Compares Them To Afzal Guru

On January 15, 2019, Former Jammu and Kashmir CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti backed Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who have named in the JNU sedition case and compared them to Afzal Guru.

Comparing the naming of Kumar, Khalid, and Kashmiri students in the chargesheet by the Delhi police to the hanging of Afzal Guru in 2014, she had said:

"Before elections 2019 these investigations are coming out hence we have doubt in this.  You must have things in mind that before 2014 elections, Congress hanged Afzal Guru to death as they would have thought that they will win 2014 election with this move. Now BJP is doing the samething what Congress had done in 2014. Now, they have chargesheeted Kanhaiya, Umar Khalid, 7-8 Kashmiri students. I condemn this. They are unnecessarily charging Kashmiri people before 2019. They are using Kashmiri people to garner votes."
