Nalini Sriharan's parol extension refused by Madras High Court

The Madras High Court rejected Nalini Sriharan's, convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case's, parole extension application, granted for daughter's wedding

Nalini Sriharan, one of the seven convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case got her parole extension application rejected on September 12. The Madra High Court refused to extend her parole application which ends on September 15. The plea for parole extension was heard by a division bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Teekaa Raman. Nalini Sriharan is currently serving life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Parole Application

Nalini Sriharan had sought parole at the pretext of her daughter's wedding. She claimed that she required parole to make arrangements for the same. She had originally asked for 6 months parole from the Madra High Court. The Madras High court, however, granted her 30 days of parole for making arrangements for her daughter's wedding. The Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict had been released from Vellore Central Prison on 25 July.

Thereafter, on August 22, the court had extended her parole for a period of 3 weeks. This time around, she had requested an extension of a month, until October 15, which was squarely rejected by the Madras High Court.

Rajiv Gandhi assassination case

Nalini Sriharan has been in prison since the past 28 years in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. She and six other people are serving life imprisonment in the case related to the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. On May 21, 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. The attack also left 14 other people dead. Originally granted a death sentence by the Supreme Court, Nalini Sriharan's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 2000.

Earlier in 2016, Nalini Sriharan was granted a 12-hour parole to attend the funeral of her father. Charithra Sriharan, Nalini's daughter, was born in prison and is currently a medical practitioner in London.
