After being slammed by Muslim clerics for celebrating Durga Puja, Trinamool MP Nusrat Jahan, on Monday said that she is not afraid of threats to her life, speaking to Republic Bharat in Kolkata. "With respect to me, there is always a controversy. Life threat? How can someone threaten me who has not given life to me? God gives life. Humans don't. They cannot be a threat," she said. Slamming those who have demanded to change her name, she said, "People know my name and those who have not made me famous, do not have the right to tell me to change my name. There is victory after fear (Darr ke aage jeet hai)," she said after visiting a Durga Pandal in Kolkata.
On Sunday, the actress-turned-politician celebrated the festival of Durga Puja at the Suruchi Sangha pandal of Kolkata. She was seen along with her husband Nikhil Jain and played the dhaak. As the MP celebrated the festival in full swing, she was also spotted dancing on the beats of the traditional dhaak. After the event, she said that she has her own way of portraying harmony towards all religions. She also expressed her pride in her Bengali culture and said it was traditional to celebrate all events with a dance.
Since the time Nusrat Jahan was elected as Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha polls, she has been miffed with controversy. Her marriage with her boyfriend Nikhil Jain in Turkey in June, made the Muslim hardliners speak against her. Later when she took oath into the Parliament wearing a sindoor and bangles, a major controversy broke out and a city-based Muslim cleric criticised Jahan for marrying a Jain and wearing sindoor, calling the practices un-Islamic. Later, she attended Jagannath Rath Yatra at ISKCON temple in Kolkata, creating ripples within the Muslim hardliners. Affirming her stance on religious inclusivity, Jahan had said that all religions speak of unity and peace. She had said that she believes in celebrating all festivals together.
