As the north-east monsoon is underway in the southern part of the country, heavy rains have been lashing in almost 15 districts of Tamil Nadu since the evening of October 29. The meteorological department regional office has said that heavy rains of more than 10 cms are been recorded in more than 80 places across the state. The district administration has announced the closure of schools and colleges in southern districts like Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Theni, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram and schools in 8 districts which include Madurai and parts of Dindigul district.
A low depression area that is formed at the Indian ocean, close to Kanyakumari and Trivandrum, is the reason for the recorded rainfall. The meteorological department has also predicted that that system could turn into a severe system that could give more rains for the next two days in almost 20 districts of Tamil Nadu, including the northern parts like Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Thiruvallur to Cauvery delta districts aswell. This will also give rains to the parts of Kerala, Karnataka and also Andhra Pradesh. The department has also announced the fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Kerala not to venture into the sea for the next two days as there is a possibility of high tides and strong winds.
