In a massive move, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in, sources have informed Republic TV about the first step the Modi government will take after the portfolios are allocated to the Cabinet Ministers who took the oath along with the Prime Minister on May 30.

In a major scoop, sources have said that the agenda of the Modi government will be to extend Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana popularly known as PM Kisan scheme to all poor farmers. Additionally, the sources also said that there are discussions on farmers pension scheme.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur transferring the first instalment of Rs. 2,000 each to over one crore farmers.

Presenting the budget for the year 2019-2020, interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal in a massive boost to the farming and agricultural sector, during his speech, announced that the farmers who own up to two hectares of land will be directly provided with an income of Rs 6000 every year.

The government came up with a Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammaan Nidhi scheme aiming to provide the small-sized farmers with 'structured, direct income support' so that they don't fall into the clutches of the money lenders.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme?

1. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-KISAN) was announced in the interim Budget 2019-20 on February 1, 2019. However, the scheme will be effective retrospectively from December 1, 2018 and will benefit more than 12 crore farmers.

2. Under the Scheme, Rs. 6,000 will be given per year to small and marginal farmers having combined land holding or ownership of up to two hectares.

3. The amount will be given in three instalments of Rs. 2,000 each and will be transferred directly to the bank account of beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer.

4. PM-KISAN, which is entirely funded by the central government, will incur an annual expenditure of Rs. 75,000 crore, said Ministry of Agriculture in a press release on Saturday.

5. The existing land-ownership system in the states/UTs (Union territories) will be used for identification of beneficiaries. Those whose names appear in land records as on February 1, 2019 are eligible for benefit, further said the release.

What are the highlights of PMKSNY?

  • This scheme was proposed by the Central Government of India to make sure of income assistance to the small and marginal farmers.

  • The weaker peasant families having cultivable land of less than 2 Hectares would be receiving Rs 6,000 as direct income assistance.

  • The scheme’s funding would be done by the Central Government of India over three equal installments of Rs 2000 each or the farmers would receive an income of Rs 500 each month.

  • Nearly 12 Crores small and marginal farmers would be benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana scheme.

  • The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana scheme would cost a whopping Rs 75,000 Crores to the Government of India.

  • There is no room for corruption as the benefits of the scheme are directly transferred to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.

  • PMKSNY would not offer additional income to the impoverished farmers, instead, it helps them with emerging needs of the crop season.
