New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium on Friday, launched an in-house inquiry into Justice Yashwant Verma following the recovery of ten crore rupees in unaccounted cash from his residence. Earlier Today, collegium led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, has transferred Verma from the Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court.
After the alleged incident, the five-member collegium, chaired by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, held an urgent meeting and decided to initiate proceedings for Justice Verma’s transfer. However, the transfer will only be finalized once the Centre approves the recommendation, which has yet to be officially submitted.
The Supreme Court Collegium convened this morning to discuss the matter. The benches of the CJI and the next four senior judges began proceedings approximately 45 minutes behind schedule, according to sources.
A large amount of unaccounted cash was discovered after a fire at Justice Verma’s residence on the night of March 14. At the time, Justice Verma and his wife were in Bhopal, while their daughter and staff called the fire department. When the fire brigade and police arrived, they reportedly found a significant stash of cash in his outhouse.
Once the fire was controlled, first responders discovered bundles of cash, which were officially documented. The police were notified, and the matter was quickly escalated to the highest levels of the judiciary and the government.
The incident caused a stir in judicial circles, prompting the Supreme Court collegium to intervene.
Justice Yashwant Varma has been serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court since October 2021. However, his tenure in Delhi seems to have been cut short due to the allegations and the subsequent discovery of cash. The recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium have now been sent to the Central government for action.
