15 Days After Disappearance in Jhelum, Uri Youth’s Body Found in PoK’s Chakothi – Will It Be Returned?

The body of a missing youth from jammu and Kashmir's Uri has been recovered from River Jhelum in Chakothi, Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK).

Chakothi: The body of a missing youth from jammu and Kashmir's Uri has been recovered from River Jhelum in Chakothi, Pakistan -administered Kashmir (PoK), 15 days after he allegedly jumped into the river. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Yasir Hussain, son of Moz Ali Shah, a resident of Dhani Busgran, Uri.

According to reports, on March 5, Yasir Hussain and Asiya Bano, daughter of Mohabat Khan from Kundi Barjala, allegedly jumped into River Jhelum from Dulanja Uri near the Line of Control (LoC). The incident, believed to be a case of suicide, triggered a massive five-day search operation by the Jammu and Kashmir polices's SDRF. However, both individuals remained untraceable at the time.

On March 20, Pakistani media and local authorities in PoK reported that an unidentified body near the Jhelum River in Chinari was recovered. The body was subsequently shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Hattian Bala, Jhelum Valley, for identification. After verification, it was confirmed to be Yasir Hussain of JK's Uri.

Will the Body Be Returned to Uri?

Following the recovery, questions have arisen about whether the body will be returned to his family in Uri. Police sources in PoK have stated that if the deceased’s family contacts them, necessary legal and procedural measures will be taken to repatriate the body via Chakothi. However, no formal request has been received so far. Officials assure that if approached, they will facilitate the return of Yasir’s remains as per Pakistani media. 

Meanwhile, Asiya Bano’s whereabouts remain unknown, and there is possibility that her body may have also drifted further downstream.
