Air India Flight Probe: Pilot Tested Positive for Marijuana, Was on Sleep Meds and Accused of Smoking Pot On Board

New Delhi: Investigation into the mid-air scare aboard an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi has taken a dramatic turn, following revelations that the pilot-in-command tested positive twice for marijuana, was taking prescribed sleep medication, and has now been accused by a crew member of smoking pot on board.

The incident occurred aboard flight AI-2379, an Airbus A320neo carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members. 

While flying over Odisha, the aircraft suffered a sudden loss of altitude of approximately 300 feet, causing momentary "negative G" conditions. 

At least 20 passengers and four cabin crew members sustained injuries, with several requiring medical attention upon landing.

An internal flight safety report reveals that the captain disclosed taking doctor-prescribed sleep aids before the trip due to severe rest disruption. 

According to his official statement, tight flight scheduling and layover timing compressed his available daytime recovery, leaving him unable to get adequate rest during the less-than-24-hour Phuket layover.

The investigation has also drawn critical attention to severe friction and misconduct involving the crew. 

On the outbound flight, the pilot reprimanded a cabin crew member who struggled to manage the pilot’s seat when called to occupy the cockpit while he used the lavatory. 

In an apparent attempt to make amends, the captain took the entire cabin crew to a party during their short Phuket layover. 

However, the reprimanded attendant later requested to be assigned to the rear of the aircraft on the return flight to stay away from the cockpit.

In another major escalation, at least one cabin crew member has formally complained that the pilot allegedly smoked pot. 

This aligns with findings that the captain failed two separate drug tests showing marijuana in his system, though the pilot has denied consuming any psychotropic substances.

According to reports, the pilot was out of his seat when the aircraft suddenly plummeted, leaving the co-pilot in command. 

Following the drop, he entered the cabin to assess injuries and reportedly warned passengers not to record videos or photos. 

Upon landing in Delhi, sources said he appeared physically unsteady, requiring physical support from an investigating officer to walk and submit his urine sample.

Both pilots have been off-rostered as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) continue a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
