Ahmedabad: Air India Ahmedabad-London flight which crashed with 242 passengers onboard in Ahmedabad's residential area near the airport failed to dispose fuel from the plane's tank, said initial reports hours after the tragic accident. As per spot reports, the flight crashed with 58,000 litres of fuel.
However, later in the day, when Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to press and briefed about the incident, he informed that the plane carried almost 1.25 lakh litres of fuel and due to high temperature, there are less chances of saving the lives.
Amit Shah also visited the crash site along with Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, MoS Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
Out of 242 passengers who were onboard the plane, 169 were Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese and 1 Canadian nationals. The Air India flight crashed just moments after it took off from the Sardar Vallahbhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad into a medical college building.
As per several videos which has surfaced from the incident site, the Air India flight turned into a fireball when it crashed in Ahmedabad.
Almost all those were onboard Air India flight that met a tragic end minutes after the take off are feared dead. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also among one of the passengers.
Just moments before the crash, the pilot of Air India flight in the MayDay call to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) said “No thrust, flight Not taking lift.”
However, when the ATC reacted to the pilot's MayDal call, there was no response from the cockpit raising the suspicion that either the flight had already crashed by then or the traffic control lost contact with the pilots.
The Air India flight AI-171 London flight that crashed in Ahmedabad today minutes after it took off was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg issued a statement on the tragic incident and said, “Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171, as well as everyone affected in Ahmedabad. I have spoken with Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.”
Boeing will defer to India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to provide information about Air India Flight 171, in adherence with the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization protocol known as Annex 13.
