New Delhi: Flight departures have been temporarily suspended at the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 following a roof collapse incident early Friday leading to inconvenience to the commuters. A portion of the roof of the Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport's Terminal-1 collapsed on Friday, damaging cars and taxis.
Yash, a passenger at Terminal 1 of Delhi airport, slammed the authorities for having no response to the queries of the passengers. “I was going to Bangalore, I had a flight at 8:15 am. Here the roof collapsed around 5, 5:15 am... The airport authority has no answer,” said Yash, as quoted by ANI.
Complaining regarding the inconvenience caused to the commuters, another passenger said that they are being asked to move to Terminal-2 of the Indira Gandhi National Airport. "I have a flight at 9 am. I came to know that the structure above (canopy) has collapsed here. Some flights have been cancelled. They (officials) are now asking us to go to Terminal 2..." said the passenger.
As a result of this incident, the authorities said that all departures from Terminal-1 are temporarily suspended and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure. However, flight arrivals have not been impacted.
Terminal-1 has only domestic flight operations. The IGIA airport has three terminals -- T1, T2 and T3.
"Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi airport's Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected," a DIAL spokesperson said in a statement. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a consortium led by GMR Group, is the operator of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital.
