Maharashtra: Mumbai has recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am today. Heavy rains in some low-lying areas led to waterlogging in many areas.
"More than 300 millimeters of rain has been recorded at different places in the six-hour period from midnight yesterday to 7 am today. Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas and suburban rail services have also been disrupted," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
Traffic Jams Across The City:
Heavy rains early Monday caused widespread waterlogging across Mumbai, submerging streets in areas like King's Circle, Kurla, Dadar and flooding the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle. Massive traffic jams were also reported throughout the city.
Traffic continued in Kurla with buses, cars, and other vehicles navigating the flooded streets.
Schools Closed:
In order to avoid inconvenience to students, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for the first session in all BMC, government, and private schools and colleges within the Mumbai (BMC) area. The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation, said BMC.
Trains Cancelled:
Suburban train services have also been impacted due to massive waterlogging. Trains such as 12110 (MMR-CSMT), 11010 (PUNE-CSMT), 12124 (PUNE CSMT DECCAN), 11007 (PUNE-CSMT DECCAN), and 12127 (CSMT-PUNE INTERCITY EXP) stand canceled due to waterlogging at various railway stations in the Mumbai division today.
Local train services, however, resumed on the Central Line after the rain receded. Central Railway's suburban services were affected at Sion and between Bhandup and Nahur stations as rainwater was above the tracks. "Rainwater was above the tracks, so trains were stopped for nearly an hour. Now that water has receded a bit, trains are restarting, but services are still affected," Central Railways CPRO said.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in Maharashtra during the next 3-4 days. As per the Met Department, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to report heavy rains from July 8-10.
