Itanagar: A person has been arrested in Guwahati for allegedly defrauding a resident of Arunachal Pradesh out of Rs 92 lakh under the guise of installing mobile towers, police said on Friday.

"The accused has been identified as Dheeraj Pao lured one Jumda Padu into a non-existent project for the installation of mobile towers in Arunachal Pradesh ," Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh said.

According to police officials, despite collecting Rs 92 lakh under false pretense, neither fulfilled his promises nor returned the funds, and was evading all communication.

After a thorough investigation and intelligence gathering, a police team traced Pao to his residence in Guwahati, Singh said.

The SP said the accused was arrested in a coordinated effort with Assam Police on Thursday evening.

Earlier in July, the state police arrested Beauty Das in Cooch Behar district, West Bengal, for her alleged involvement in multiple fraud cases totaling Rs 27,20,000. This arrest came after local residents, including Pintu Taid and Dugi Vivek, filed complaints accusing Das of financial misconduct while she worked as a collector for two cooperative societies in Nirjuli.

The complainants stated that Das, who is originally from Cooch Behar but currently lives in Nirjuli, had fraudulently collected Rs 7,20,000 from Taid and Rs 20,00,000 from Vivek, along with amounts from 23 other individuals, through her role at the Demorijo Multipurpose Cooperative Society and the Happy Thrift and Credit Society. "Based on these complaints, a case has been registered at the Nirjuli police station under the relevant sections," said SI Shakti Lamgu, one of the investigating officers.
