Bengaluru Stampede: A deadly stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday, June 4, claimed the lives of 11 people and left nearly 50 injured. Thousands gathered to witness the felicitation ceremony of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who had just secured their maiden IPL title after a dramatic six-run win over Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Despite the event being restricted to those with valid entry passes, a massive crowd had assembled near the stadium, leading to overcrowding and a complete breakdown of crowd control measures.
The situation escalated rapidly into a stampede, turning what was meant to be a moment of celebration into a devastating tragedy.
In a statement issued on Thursday, RCB said, “The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family,” the statement read. “As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of INR 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased.”
To aid those who sustained injuries in the stampede, RCB also launched a dedicated fund named ‘RCB Cares’.
The initiative is aimed at providing medical and financial support to the affected fans. “Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do. We remain united in grief,” the team added in its statement.
