Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Monday claimed that his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was hit by a “massive cyberattack”, leading to repeated outages throughout the day.  Millions of users worldwide reported log-in issues, failed page loads, and error messages, with many unable to access posts or refresh their feeds.

“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against ????. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing,” Musk wrote on X, responding to rumours about a possible attack on X.

Complaints about outages on X surged on Monday, with Downdetector recording a sharp increase in user reports at 3:30 PM and again at 7:30 PM, as over 40,000 users reported being unable to access the platform.

Downdetector, which tracks outages by compiling status updates from multiple sources, including user-submitted reports, indicated that at 3:20 PM alone, 17,871 complaints were logged.

Users continued to report disruptions at 7:32 PM and 9:32 PM, with 56% facing issues with the app, 33% experiencing problems with the website, and 11% encountering server connection errors. Many complained that the app failed to load, with the outage appearing to affect users globally.

Despite the widespread disruption, X has yet to issue an official response.

This isn't the first major outage for the platform back in March 2023, when it was still known as Twitter, users experienced a series of technical glitches for over an hour, during which links stopped working, login attempts failed, and images were unable to load.
