New Delhi: An IndiGo flight (6E 2045) bound for Amritsar from New Delhi returned to the capital on Monday evening following reports of drone sightings and explosions in parts of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. The airline took the step as a precautionary measure in response to escalating security alerts and enforced blackout protocols across the region.
The drone scare erupted soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national address, with reports confirming sightings over Samba in Jammu and Jalandhar in Punjab. The situation intensified further as at least 15 drones were reportedly spotted over the Northern Command and Air Force Station in Udhampur, while around five drones were seen near Katra, close to the revered Vaishno Devi shrine.
Locals in the Dasuya area of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab reported hearing 7 to 8 loud explosions, a claim confirmed by Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain. In Jalandhar, explosions were also heard near Suranasi village, and the district’s Deputy Commissioner issued an urgent alert following drone activity near key army establishments.
Authorities responded swiftly by imposing blackouts in sensitive areas including Pathankot, the Vaishno Devi Bhawan, and along the Yatra track. India’s air defence systems were activated, and visuals from Samba revealed red streaks lighting up the sky, accompanied by explosion sounds—evidence of possible interceptions by defence forces.
The surge in drone activity has put security agencies across the region on high alert. Investigations are underway to determine the source, intent, and payload of the aerial objects. With ongoing tensions and high-level military preparedness, airspace and public safety measures remain under strict vigilance.
