BREAKING: Justice Yashwant Varma to Return to Parent Allahabad High Court as Centre Clears Transfer

New Delhi: Amid a row over cash overhaul from his official residence, Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court was on Friday transferred to his parent Allahabad High Court after Central Government approved of it, according to a Law ministry notification.

The notification said, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, Delhi High Court, to be a Judge of Allahabad High Court and to direct him to assume charge of his office in the Allahabad High Court.”

This came a day after the government announced it was reviewing Justice Varma's case and would make a decision on his transfer within a day or two.

SC Dismisses FIR Plea Against Justice Varma

Earlier on Firday, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea seeking an FIR into the recovery of huge pile of Rs 15 crore cash from Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence.

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer earlier this week, stating that the decision was unrelated to an internal probe into the alleged discovery of cash at Justice Varma's home following a Holi night fire.

The Supreme Court Collegium's decision was met with protests from the Allahabad Bar Association, which launched an indefinite strike, stating it would not tolerate judges facing corruption charges.

On Thursday, heads of various High Court Bar Associations met Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, urging the withdrawal of Justice Yashwant Varma's transfer to Allahabad. After the meeting, Karnataka High Court Bar Association President Vivek Reddy said the CJI assured a thorough probe, with the CJI and four senior judges meeting the representatives, as 18 bar associations united in opposing the transfer.

After a cash pile was recovered from his residence during a fire last week, Justice Varma was transferred from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court. The Delhi High Court registry also removed his judicial assignments.
