New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (March 4) granted bail to two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar in the murder case of Junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar, ANI reported.

The latest ruling allows for his continued release on bail while the trial continues.

This comes after Kumar had initially been granted a seven-day interim bail for medical reasons to undergo knee surgery in 2023.

According to the chargesheet filed by the Delhi police, Sushil Kumar and his associates assaulted Sagar Dhankar and his two friends.

A disturbing video that surfaced on social media purportedly shows Kumar and his associates allegedly beating a man with sticks, further linking him to the crime.

Investigations by the Delhi Police revealed that Sagar and his friends were kidnapped from different locations across Delhi and brought to a stadium where the attack took place. The stadium gate was allegedly locked from the inside, and security guards were asked to leave. Once inside, the victims were surrounded and brutally beaten for around 30 to 40 minutes with weapons such as lathis, hockey sticks, baseball bats, and other objects, as detailed in the police’s final charge sheet, which spans over 1,000 pages.

The probe further revealed that the violence was rooted in a dispute involving the buying, selling, and occupation of disputed land.

While Kumar’s regular bail has been granted, the legal proceedings in the case are ongoing, with the investigation into the murder continuing to unfold. The Delhi High Court's ruling provides relief to Kumar for now, but the final judgment in the murder case will depend on further legal proceedings and evidence presented by both sides.

The case has garnered significant media attention, given the high-profile nature of the accused and the horrific nature of the crime, and it is expected to remain in the public spotlight until a verdict is reached.
