New Delhi: The mobile phones of eight Delhi policemen have been seized as part of an investigation into the cash recovery case linked to Justice Yashwant Varma. The phones have been sent for forensic tests to check if any videos recorded at the scene were deleted or tampered with. This comes after a statement by a constable who was stopped from entering the room where huge pile of cash found later.
The investigation started after a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s official residence on March 14. During the cleanup, large amounts of cash were found, some of it burnt. The Supreme Court later released images and videos of the cash, increasing pressure on the case.
The seized phones belong to Tughlaq Road Police Station SHO Umesh Malik, Investigating Officer Havildar Roopchand, Sub-Inspector Rajneesh, two mobile bike patrol officers, and three PCR personnel. Their statements have been recorded, and officials are checking if any evidence was removed or altered.
The constable who was posted at Justice Varma's residence revealed that at the night of fire accident (March 14), he was stopped from entering the room where pile of cash was found later. In his statement to the Delhi Police, the constable said that only six fire officials and five officers from the Delhi Police were allowed access to the area following the incident. The constable’s statement raises concerns over the handling of the investigation scene and possible attempt to hide evidence.
Meanwhile, Justice Varma’s transfer from Delhi to Allahabad High Court has triggered protests. Lawyers in Allahabad have gone on strike, demanding strict action against him. A group of 14 High Court Bar Association members has arrived in Delhi to meet the Chief Justice of India. Karnataka High Court Bar Association President Vivek Reddy also supported the protest, saying, “If he is unfit for Delhi, he should not be given work anywhere in India.”
The investigation is now focusing on three key questions: where the cash came from, who removed the burnt money from the house, and whether any digital evidence has been erased. Justice Varma has been told not to delete any data from his phone.
As the probe deepens, forensic tests on the seized phones will help determine if any key evidence was hidden or destroyed.
