Chandigarh Issues Notices to Over 4,000 House Owners to Install Solar Plants
The Chandigarh estate office warns that failure to comply within two months may result in property resumption or cancellation under the applicable bylaws.
Chandigarh: Thousands of homeowners in Chandigarh have been issued notices warning that their properties may be taken over if they do not install solar power plants within two months. The notices were sent by the Chandigarh estate office for violating building regulations.
According to Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, “Over 4,000 notices have been sent to owners of houses 500 square yards and above.”
The notices state that failure to install a solar photovoltaic rooftop power plant, as required by Chandigarh Building Rules (Urban) 2017, will result in the resumption or cancellation of the property. The rule mandates houses of 1 kanal (500 square yards) to have a 1 KWp capacity solar plant, 2 kanal houses to have a 2 KWp plant, and properties larger than 2 kanal to install a 3 KWp plant.
The assistant estate officer explained that if owners do not confirm compliance within two months, legal action will be taken under the Capital of Punjab (Development and Regulation) Act, 1952, leading to potential resumption or cancellation of the site.
So far, 1,867 houses have installed the required solar power systems, while over 4,500 properties are still non-compliant. The administration had earlier required only houses above 500 square yards to install solar plants, but the rule has been revised to include homes 250 square yards and above. Notices for these smaller properties will be sent soon.
