Reetam Singh, a Congress spokesperson in Assam, known mostly for his social media hooliganism was arrested on Saturday for making derogatory remarks targeting not only a sitting MLA but also slander remarks targeting his Dalit wife and father-in-law.

It has been learned that a police complaint was filed by Rajashree Deka, wife of BJP legislator Manab Deka based on which a case was registered by Lakhimpur Police with Case No. 91/2025 under section- 356(2)of ENS R/W Sec 67 IT Act, 2000 R/W Sec 3(1)(г)/3(1)(5)/3(1)(u)/3(1)(v) oFSCST Act. 1989.

Singh who was arrested on Saturday, was seen trying to create a ruckus as he intentionally delayed in cooperating with police and called top Congress leaders and party workers to his residence.

It may be mentioned that in a tweet, which he later deleted, Reetam Singh accused Manab Deka as a rapist and referred to ‘a case’ in Basistha Police Station of Guwahati. He further used derogatory terms such as ‘Ghar Jamai’ for the MLA and also dragged his father-in-law Hemaram Keot, who had earlier served as the Commissioner of Taxes Assam and is a prominent Dalit figure of his time.

However, when enquired with the police regarding any case involving Manab Deka on charges of rape, the police ruled it out stating there is no such case.

Meanwhile, the Congress party which often talks about Dalits, was seen obstructing police officers while discharging their duties on Saturday. Congress’s deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi was seen pointing fingers at police officers and questioning them about the arrest of Singh.

Taking it to social media, Rajashree Deka has posted an open letter to Gaurav Gogoi on her Instagram handle and questioned his stand. Rajashree wrote, “I am shocked at your recent actions and the kind of people who chose to support. I am a lady, a wife, a sister, a mother, and a proud member of the SC community who has been irreparably harmed.”

Speaking to Republic Media Network, a top source in the Assam Police said that Lakhimpur Police is following all necessary protocols as required in every case.

It may be mentioned that in the notice to inform grounds of arrest as per BNS, police have stated that Reetam Singh is a habitual offender and was earlier arrested in a similar case for outraging the modesty of women on social media. He is currently out on bail in that case registered at Dispur Police Station.
