Delhi-NCR Weather Alert: Dust Storm and Rain Brings Relief From Sweltering Heat, Orange Alert Issued

New Delhi: The national capital is currently experiencing volatile weather, with dust storms, high winds, and scattered rain affecting the city and its surrounding NCR areas. This abrupt transition, following a period of extreme heat, reflects a typical pre-monsoon weather pattern.

Following an orange nowcast warning, grey skies have taken over, and heavy rain is sweeping through the region. 

A fierce dust storm, coupled with moderate to severe thunderstorms, is hitting various parts of the capital. As the system progresses, it is delivering localized rainfall, steady drizzle, and lightning, all accompanied by gusty winds clocking in at 60–80 km/h.

This dramatic change comes after several days of an unrelenting heatwave. The clouds and cooling winds are providing an immediate break from the high temperatures that have gripped the city.

A fast-moving spell of rain and dust storms- with wind gusts up to 50 km/h- is actively impacting Rohini, Gurgaon, Delhi, CentralDelhi, East Delhi, Noida, and parts of Ghaziabad.

Authorities are advising residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take necessary precautions as the storm continues to move across the region.

Heatwave Grips Capital

Prior to this weather disturbance, Delhi had been experiencing unseasonably high daytime temperatures. These prolonged heatwave conditions left the ground extremely dry, allowing strong winds to easily pick up dust- a primary driver behind the formation of dust storms in North India at this time of year.

In areas where rain has fallen, temperatures experienced a slight drop, providing temporary relief from the intense heat. However, the rainfall has been patchy rather than uniform, as these seasonal systems typically produce scattered showers instead of continuous downpours.

What's Behind the weather change

Meteorological data indicates that the current weather is fueled by pre-monsoon instability. Intense surface heating, increased atmospheric moisture, and wind convergence are triggering sudden thunderstorms, while the influence of a western disturbance across North India is accelerating shifts in wind patterns and cloud development.

The dust storm and sudden gusts have disrupted daily life in several ways. Reduced road visibility has led to temporary traffic congestion, while elevated dust levels may cause discomfort for those with respiratory issues. Additionally, brief power fluctuations have been reported in some areas.

Weather forecasts suggest that Delhi will likely remain in an unstable pre-monsoon phase, with further dust storms, gusty winds, and isolated showers expected in the coming days. Despite this activity, consistent monsoon rainfall is not anticipated in the immediate future.
