Delhi Weather Update: Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday, offering much-needed relief from the recent spell of rising temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Delhi, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h.
The alert covers multiple areas, including Central, East, New Delhi, North, North-East, North-West, Shahdara, South, South-East, South-West, and West Delhi.
“Light to moderate rain/moderate thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (speed 40–60 kmph) are likely to occur at most places across Delhi,” IMD stated.
Many in Delhi-NCR had been experiencing intense heat, prompting health warnings and growing discomfort, particularly during the daytime.
In its broader update, the IMD also confirmed the advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Icarus Islands, and sections of the north Andaman Sea.
The IMD uses a colour-coded alert system to notify the public and authorities about the severity of weather conditions:
Yellow Alert: Be aware (moderate weather conditions)
Orange Alert: Indicates severe weather, with expected rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in a single day.
Red Alert: Indicates extremely heavy rainfall above 204.5 mm.
