Chennai: A serious incident involving an IndiGo A321 aircraft occurred at Chennai airport on March 8, when the plane's tail touched the runway during landing. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with the airline grounding the aircraft until necessary repairs and clearance are obtained.

According to IndiGo, the Airbus A321 aircraft was involved in a tail strike incident during landing at Chennai airport. The airline has since grounded the aircraft, which will undergo repairs and clearance before returning to service. IndiGo has also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to subsequent cancellations following the grounding of the aircraft.

The incident has raised concerns about aviation safety and the need for regulatory scrutiny. The DGCA has launched an investigation into the incident, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the tail strike and determine the cause. The probe will also assess whether any safety protocols were breached and if there were any lapses on the part of the airline or its crew.

The incident is the latest in a series of safety concerns affecting the Indian aviation industry. In recent months, there have been reports of technical glitches and safety lapses involving various airlines.

Details of Incident

According to reports, the flight from Mumbai to Chennai, struck its tail on the runway while landing at the airport. Following the incident, IndiGo issued an official statement, saying, “On March 8, 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft made contact with the runway during landing at Chennai airport. The aircraft has been grounded and will return to service after necessary repairs and regulatory clearance. At IndiGo, passenger and crew safety remains our highest priority, and we operate with the strictest safety standards. We regret any inconvenience caused to our passengers due to subsequent flight cancellations resulting from this incident.”

As per reports, the same aircraft had previously experienced a tail strike last year. Additionally, the airline has reportedly recorded at least 8 tail strikes involving Airbus A321 flights in the past 18 months.
