Former PM Devegowda visits State of Unity, PM Modi expresses happiness

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took to Twitter to express his happiness after the former Prime Minister H D Devegowda visited the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. Devegowda on Saturday had paid a visit to the 182-meter tall statue of India's first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat's Kevadia.

Haradanahalli Doddegowda Devegowda served as the 11th Prime Minister of India from 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997. He was previously the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. He was a member of the 16th Lok Sabha, representing the Hassan constituency of Karnataka, and is the National President of the Janata Dal (Secular) party.

'Majestic Statue of Unity'

Earlier, on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 69th birthday, he visited his home state, Gujarat, to celebrate his birthday by surveying tourism projects in Kevadia at the Sardar Sarovar Dam and also to perform a Narmada pooja. While on his way, PM Modi shared a video of the aerial view of Sardar Patel's Statue of Unity. The video was shot from PM Modi's helicopter while it was over the Kevadia Town.

The visuals show the aerial view of the world's tallest statue from all sides. The edifice to the Iron Man of India can be seen with a backdrop of the hills around the Narmada River. In his tweet, PM Modi described the statue as 'majestic' and asserted how it was a tribute to one of the great founding-fathers of India.

About Statue of Unity

The 'Statue of Unity' is the world’s tallest statue. Located in Gujarat's Kevadia, it has been featured in the second annual list of the magazine's 'greatest places' compilation of 100 "new and noteworthy destinations to experience right now”.

Standing 597-feet tall on the banks of the Narmada river, the Statue of Unity is a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who was the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of independent India. It looks over the Sardar Sarovar Dam, allowing visitors to see the nearby mountains.
