The devotees had got down from the bus and were buying fruits when an argument broke out between them and the fruit vendors over fruit prices. The vendors chased the devotees on the road and then thrashed them with sticks. The videos of the violence have surfaced on the internet, which show fruit vendors beating the devotees, bikes fallen on the road, people trying to stop the brawl.

In another news, this is not the first time that Sambhal has been in the headlines for violence. Last year, massive violence broke out between the police and a group of protestors, over court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in the UP district. Prohibitory orders were issued, four people had died and several others were seriously injured; the authorities had also banned outside entry into the district.

The whitewashing of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal was completed on Friday, marking the end of a renovation project mandated by the Allahabad High Court. The restoration work, which began earlier this week, was carried out under the guidance of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), following an order from the High Court. The mosque's management had previously requested approval for whitewashing, as well as the installation of extra lighting and decorative elements around the site. The renovation of the Mughal-era mosque is occurring amid ongoing legal disputes about its history, with a petition alleging that the mosque was constructed over the remains of an ancient Hindu temple.
