Gauhati High Court Grants Bail to USTM Chancellor, Another Petition to be Heard on Tuesday

The Gauhati High Court on Monday, granted bail in the first FIR registered against him. But he will have to remain in judicial custody for another few hours as the bail petition in the second FIR is yet to be taken up.

The Chancellor of Meghalaya based private university, USTM (University of Science & Technology Meghalaya), Mahbubul Haque who was arrested on the night of Feb 21 is currently in judicial custody, got bail in the Case No 54/25 of Patharkandi Police Station. However, he will have to wait for another day, as in the Case No 55/24, the High Court will take up the bail petition on Tuesday.

At the Gauhati High Court Haque is being represented by noted senior advocate Angshuman Bora.

It may be mentioned that there were two cases lodged against him at the Patharkandi Police Station on February 21. Though in the first FIR, he has got bail, the second was only filed on Monday.

Haque was arrested by Assam Police for allegedly promising students to help them in unfair practice to pass the 12th Board Exams. The situation at Central Public School in Patharkandi area of Sribhumi turned hostile as more than 240 students who went to appear for the exams there from places like Kamrup, Goalpara and Barpeta alleged that they were not helped as promised. Acting on this, police arrested Haque from his Guwahati residence on the night of Feb 21.

It may be mentioned that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused him of commercialising education in the State through unfair means. Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently said, “I have been telling since long that this man is a very big fraud. He is all about fraud. Some intellectuals from Assam were lured by him to mislead the people. Gradually things are coming out. We will ensure that education is not made into a market commodity in Assam.”

Republic Media Network tried to reach out to Mahbubul Haque’s family and visited the house, however, no one was available and the security guards told us that everyone is out of station. No one from USTM, could be reached for their reaction.
