Chennai: A train derailment incident occurred on Thursday evening when three empty goods wagons of a New Modified Goods (NMG) rake derailed near Tambaram Yard in Chennai. According to reports, there were no injuries or casualties reported in the incident. According to Southern Railway officials, the incident took place at 6.52 pm when the wagons were being shifted to Tambaram Yard. The derailed wagons were the 8th, 9th, and 10th wagons of the NMG rake.
According to the sources, the railway officials promptly visited the site, and restoration work began immediately. Despite the incident, officials assured that there would be no impact on suburban and express train services.
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
A senior official of the railways stated that the teams are working to restore the tracks and wagons to normalcy. The restoration process involves inspecting the damaged wagons, repairing or replacing them if necessary, and ensuring the tracks are safe for train operations.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the derailment. The officials stated that during the preliminary inquiry, it surfaced that the possible causes could include track defects, wagon malfunction, or human error. The investigation will help identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Southern Railway will take necessary steps to prevent such incidents and ensure smooth rail operations.
