New Delhi: Renowned American podcaster and computer scientist, Lex Fridman, in a remarkable display of respect and admiration, embarked on a 48-hour fast in honour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , prior to their conversation on his podcast, ‘The Lex Fridman Podcast'. He explained that he went on to fast to get into right mindset before the podcast and get into the spiritual level to begin conversation with PM Modi. Fridman's thoughtful gesture was met with heartfelt gratitude from the prime minister, who took the opportunity to share the importance and benefits of fasting in Indian culture.
Fridman's decision to fast was inspired by PM Modi's own devotion to fasting, which he has practiced for many years. As Fridman explained, “So just water, no food, in honor of this conversation, just to get in the right mindset, get into the spiritual level. I’ve read that you often fast for many days.”
PM Modi was deeply touched by Fridman's gesture, expressing his "deepest gratitude" for the tribute. He went on to explain the importance of fasting in Indian culture, stressing its role in cultivating discipline, balance, and self-awareness. "Fasting is actually a scientific process... Whenever I fast for an extended period, I prepare my body in advance. For 5 to 7 days before the fast, I follow various Ayurvedic practices and yoga practices, along with other traditional cleansing methods to internally reset my system," PM Modi shared.
The conversation also delved into PM Modi's personal experiences with fasting, including his first encounter with the practice during his school days. He recalled participating in a one-day fast inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's vision of cow protection, which sparked a lifelong commitment to fasting. During the conversation, Fridman's thoughtful gesture and PM Modi's gracious response created a memorable moment.
The conversation also went to thought-provoking discussion on the benefits and significance of fasting in Indian culture and spirituality. Prime Minister Modi, known for his devotion to fasting, shared his personal experiences and insights, shedding light on this ancient practice.
According to Prime Minister Modi, "In India, our religious traditions are actually a way of life. Our Supreme Court once gave a brilliant interpretation of Hinduism. They have stated that Hinduism is not about rituals or methods of worship. But rather it is a way of living, a philosophy that guides life itself." Fasting, in this context, is not merely a physical act, but a means to cultivate discipline, balance, and self-awareness. As Modi explained, "Fasting is actually a scientific process... Whenever I fast for an extended period, I prepare my body in advance. For 5 to 7 days before the fast, I follow various Ayurvedic practices and yoga practices, along with other traditional cleansing methods to internally reset my system."
PM Narendra Modi's personal experience with fasting dates back to his school days, when he participated in a one-day fast inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's vision of cow protection. The initial experience sparked a lifelong commitment to fasting, which he believes has profoundly impacted his life and leadership. As he shared, "Fasting never slows me down. I work just as much as usual, sometimes I even work more. And another fascinating thing I’ve noticed is that when I need to express my thoughts, I’m amazed at where they come from and how they flow. It’s truly an incredible experience." PM Modi's dedication to fasting has also influenced his interactions with world leaders, as evident in his anecdote about meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House.
As Prime Minister Modi navigates the complexities of global leadership, his commitment to fasting remains unwavering. He follows various fasting traditions throughout the year, including the ‘Chaturmas' period, where he eats only one meal a day for four to four and a half months. During the Navratri festival, he completely abstains from food and only drinks hot water for nine days. This discipline, he believes, enables him to stay focused and energised, even in the midst of demanding leadership responsibilities.
The prime minister's devotion to fasting offers a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual and cultural practices that shape his leadership and personal life. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of modern times, PM Modi's commitment to this ancient discipline gives a powerful explaination of the importance of balance, self-awareness, and spiritual growth.
