Kolkata: In a blatant attack on press freedom, Republic Bangla reporter Pinki was forcefully held inside the registrar’s office at Jadavpur University while reporting on the ongoing protest at the institution. The Mamata Banerjee -led government in West Bengal has once again demonstrated its hostility towards independent journalism by allowing such an incident to occur in a public institution.
R Bangla reporter Pinki who was covering the developments at Jadavpur University, confirmed that she was detained inside the registrar’s office and was being coerced into deleting her footage. “We are inside the registrar's room. They asked us to delete the video footage. This is not a private area. This is Aurobindo Bhawan. This is an open space. What are they scared of?” she said while reporting from within the university premises.
Another R Bangla reporter Bhaskar was also locked inside the registrar's office for doing his duty.
Republic Bangla reporter Hridita was chased out of the campus by an aggressive crowd while reporting live. Undeterred, she later re-entered the university, confronting those responsible.
Amid the chaos, Republic Bangla’s Santu Pan raised critical questions about the presence of an ‘Azad Kashmir’ poster inside the university, demanding to know whether any attempt was made to remove it.
The incident raises serious concerns about the state of media freedom in West Bengal, where journalists critical of the ruling dispensation face threats, intimidation, and, in many cases, physical harassment. Under Mamata Banerjee’s government, there has been a pattern of curbing journalistic freedom, especially when it comes to platforms that challenge the ruling Trinamool Congress ( TMC ) narrative.
Republic Bangla stands firm against any attempts to muzzle the press and will continue to report the truth, undeterred by political intimidation. The question now is whether Mamata Banerjee’s administration will take accountability for this shameful attack on journalistic freedom—or will it continue to trample upon democracy in the name of power?
Republic Media Network’s Editor-in-Chief, Arnab Goswami , strongly condemned the Mamata Banerjee-led government over the hooliganism and use of force against Republic Bangla reporters at Jadavpur University. Calling out the intimidation tactics, Arnab said that his team would not be silenced by "anti-national forces" operating on the campus. He denounced the assault on press freedom, vowing to continue fearless reporting despite attempts to suppress the truth.
Republic Bangla has increasingly found itself in the crosshairs of the Mamata Banerjee government, facing intimidation, attacks, and wrongful arrests for exposing uncomfortable truths. Last month, a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was caught on camera assaulting a Republic Bangla journalist for simply asking the right questions.
