New Delhi: In a significant development for rail connectivity in Northeast India, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the completion of the Sairang Rail Bridge construction.

In a post on X, while calling the completion of the project a ‘major milestone’, Vaishnaw shared the magnificent glimpses of the bridge.

Aizawl To Come Under Rail Network

The Sairang Rail Bridge will create a direct rail link to Aizawl which is currently not connected by a rail network. This will make travel to and from Mizoram much easier and faster, enhancing accessibility.

The expected inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Project is slated for July this year. So far, the project has incurred an expenditure of Rs 7,714 crore out of its total cost of Rs 8,215 crore.

The railway will feature four key stations: Sairang-Sihhmui, Mualkhang, Kawnpui, and Hortoki. These stations will play a pivotal role in enhancing the railway’s functionality.

The new 51.38 km railway line between Bhairabi and Sairang is divided into four sections: Bhairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang.

The project involves a total of 12,853 meters of tunneling, with 12,807 metres already completed. It also includes 55 major bridges and 89 minor bridges, of which 47 major bridges and 87 minor bridges have been finished so far.

Additionally, the construction of the tallest pier of the project, Pier P-4 of Bridge No. 196 at the approach to Sairang Station, has been completed. Standing at 104 meters, this pier is 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar. The project also encompasses the construction of 5 road-over bridges and 6 road-under bridges.

Once operational, the railway is projected to significantly improve interconnectivity within Mizoram, while reducing travel costs, streamlining trade, and integrating the state more closely with national and regional transport networks.
