Kolkata: Amidst Holi celebrations across the country, an incident of desecration of the idols of god and goddess has led to a massive outrage among the people West Bengal's Kamalpur area. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal, has strongly condemned the act, urging swift action from the West Bengal Police. Adhikari took to his X handle to share the incident with desecrated pictures of idols saying "another day, another despicable act of desecration of idols in WB".
According to the BJP MLA post on X, the incident occurred in the Amdabad area of Nandigram II block, where villagers were celebrating local puja festivities since last Tuesday. The festivities, which included puja and Ram Narayan Kirtan, were proceeding peacefully until yesterday around midnight when a villager discovered that the idols had been broken. The villager informed the other villagers, who assembled and witnessed the hooligan act.
Sharing the pictures and videos of the incident, Suvendu Adhikari has urged the Director-General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal, to take immediate action and instruct the local police to find the culprits and bring them to justice. Adhikari asserted that such repeated heinous acts targeting Sanatani religious activities will only widen the communal rift in society. He stressed that the West Bengal Police need to act tough and refrain from covering up such horrendous acts.
In his X post, Adhikari wrote, “Another day another despicable act of desecration of Idols in WB. The villagers of Kamalpur in Amdabad area of Nandigram II Block were celebrating some local Puja Festivities since last Tuesday. Puja and Ram Narayan Kirtan were going on peacefully. Yesterday, around midnight, a villager while returning home saw that the Idols have been broken. He informed the other villagers who later assembled and witnessed the horrific act.”
"I would like to urge DGP West Bengal Police to take stock of the situation and instruct the local Police to find out the culprits and bring them to Justice swiftly.
Such repeated heinous acts targeting Sanatani religious activities will only widen the communal rift in the society. The WB Police need to act tough and refrain from covering the lid on such horrendous acts," he said.
Adhikari's appeal comes at a time when the West Bengal Police are already facing criticism for their handling of recent incidents. The police have been accused of inaction and bias, which has led to widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
The incident in Kamalpur is not an isolated one. In recent months, West Bengal has witnessed a surge in incidents of intolerance and violence. From attacks on temples and idols to clashes between rival groups, the state has been plagued by a growing sense of communal tension.
