Protests against the Judge Cash Scandal that shocked the country and sparked major questions on the judiciary's accountability and transparency, continue. In a latest update, a two-judge Supreme Court bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan are hearing a plea filed by SC advocate Mathews Nedumpara, seeking an FIR against Justice Yashwant Varma, Delhi High Court judge, at whose residence unaccounted cash was found after a fire incident.
In the petition, the advocate has demanded strict action against the Delhi HC judge and also an FIR against him, questioning why this wasn't done earlier. Bar Associations from across the country have also registered their protests in this issue and have also met CJI Sanjiv Khanna, to share their concerns and demands with him. Justice Varma has been stripped off judicial work as per Delhi High Court CJ's order, on the CJI's directions.
The Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court has been instructed not to assign any judicial work to Justice Yashwant Varma. “The Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court for the time being has been asked not to assign any judicial work to Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, when he assumes charge as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court,” said the Supreme Court.
The three member Judge commitee is seeking written responses from the Delhi Police top brass that includes Delhi Police Commisioner and Deputy Commisioner of Police. Along with this the statements of Delhi Fire Service in written are going to be also taken. Once the statements are provided they will corroborate all these evidences and find out whether there any any anomalies.
Justice Yashwant Varma to Return to Parent Allahabad High Court as Centre Clears Transfer
Cutting across party lines, Odisha lawmakers on Friday requested Speaker Surama Padhy to issue a ruling directing the government to raise salaries of MLAs and pensions for former legislators.
The issue was raised during Zero Hour by Opposition Chief Whip Pramila Mallik, who highlighted the financial hardships faced by ex-MLAs due to inadequate pensions that do not align with inflation.
Disposing off the plea seeking an FIR against the Delhi HC Judge, the apex court said, “There is no basis to interfere in this matter today. In-house inquiry is going on right now. There may be many options after the report comes.”
Justice Oka, while dismissing the plea, said, “Heard petitioner in person. As far as grievance regarding third respondent is concerned as can be seen from supreme court website the in house inquiry proceedings are underway. After the report is submitted by the committee there will be several options open for the CJI. Therefore at this stage not correct to entertain the plea at this stage. At this stage it is not needed to reconsider judgments of this court.”

Amid the ongoing Judge Cash Scandal, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has ordered the reconstitution of several administrative committees that included Justice Yashwant Varma. The order on the court's website read, “The Committees of Hon’ble Judges of this Court are reconstituted with immediate effect.”
