New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has raised three crucial questions for Justice Yashwant Varma, who is under scrutiny after a large amount of cash was recovered from his residence following a fire incident.
This development comes after Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya submitted a report regarding the alleged involvement of Delhi HC Judge in cash-burning scandal. CJI Khanna directed three specific questions to the Delhi HC Chief Justice, which were meant to be answered by Justice Yashwant Varma himself.
The first question sought clarification on why such a huge sum of money was stored at the judge's residence. The report quoted CJI Khanna asking, "How does he account for the presence of money/cash in the room located in his premises?"
The second question was even more pressing, demanding an explanation of the source of the cash found at his residence. The CJI stated, "Explain the source of money/cash which was found in the said room."
The third and final question focused on what happened after the alleged fire. CJI Khanna wanted to know who had removed the burned cash from the judge's residence on the morning of March 15, 2025.
The issue started when a fire broke out at Justice Yashwant Varma’s residence on March 14. At that time, the judge and his wife were in Bhopal, while their daughter and household staff alerted the fire department.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a stash of cash hidden in an outhouse on the premises. After the fire was put out, authorities documented the recovered money and informed the police.
