On Wednesday, the Supreme Court declined an oral request for an expedited hearing on a petition urging the Delhi Police to register a complaint and probe the alleged discovery of burnt cash bundles at the residence of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma.
Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, leading the bench, advised advocate Mathews J Nedumpara—one of the petitioners—to refrain from making "public statements." When pressed for an urgent hearing, the bench expressed regret, saying "sorry..." and assured the matter would be scheduled in due time.
In another development, Allahabad High Court Bar Association's indefinite strike continued Wednesday in protest against the proposed transfer of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma, who is under investigation following the discovery of a large amount of cash at his residence.
Meanwhile, the Oudh Bar Association (OBA) of the Lucknow bench urged the Centre to reject the Supreme Court Collegium’s transfer recommendation. It also called for impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma to safeguard public trust in the judiciary.
Lawyers from the Allahabad High Court Bar Association have been protesting at gate number 3 of the high court bench in Allahabad. Their opposition intensified after the Supreme Court Collegium reaffirmed its recommendation to transfer Justice Varma, prompting them to declare an indefinite strike from Tuesday.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s widely used digital payment system, experienced a significant outage today evening, leaving users struggling to complete transactions. The disruption, which affected multiple payment apps, led to a surge in complaints from users unable to process payments.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the system has now been restored.
Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is down for several users across India. The disruption led to numerous complaints from users attempting to make digital payments through various UPI-supported apps like Google Pay, Paytm , and the State Bank of India’s platform.
A delegation from the Allahabad High Court Bar Association met Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal inside the Parliament. The meeting, which lasted for a couple of hours, was described as "very positive" by sources.
Anil Tiwari, a key member of the delegation, confirmed the development and said that discussions were held on various issues concerning the judiciary. "We met the Law Minister today. It was a very positive meeting," he said.
The discussion also reportedly included reforms to ensure a corruption-free judiciary.
Tiwari further informed that representatives from 14 to 15 bar associations were scheduled to meet in Delhi tomorrow to deliberate on similar concerns. "We all want a corruption-free judiciary," he emphasized.

A plane carrying Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was forced to return to Agra's Kheria Airport shortly after takeoff on Wednesday due to a technical glitch.

Ahead of a possible missile testing from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha's Balasore district, around 32,000 people living in the vicinity were on Wednesday shifted to safe shelters, officials said.The people residing in six hamlets within a 2.5 km radius of launch pad -3 of ITR have been evacuated to nearby three shelter centres on early Wednesday ahead of a missile test, they said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed Uttar Pradesh Police not to arrest two journalists for four more weeks in connection with four FIRs registered against them for writing an article and making some posts on X.
A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal extended its earlier order asking the state police not to take any coercive steps against journalists Abhishek Updhyay and Mamta Tripathi for four more weeks.
The bench said, in the meanwhile, the journalists can avail legal remedies for seeking quashing of the FIRs lodged against them at several places in Uttar Pradesh.
Upadhyay had published an Article on "caste dynamics of the general administration" and identified people of a particular caste who were deployed in responsible positions in Uttar Pradesh.
Several FIRs were lodged against Tripathi in relation to certain posts by her.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice regarding a petition challenging the election of AAP leader Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency in the recent Assembly elections, alleging her involvement in corrupt practices.
Atishi defeated the BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes.
According to the petition, Atishi is accused of engaging in the corrupt practice of "bribery" as defined under Section 123(1)(A) of the Representation of People Act, 1951.
The bench of Justice Jyoti Singh, after noting the submission, sought responses from Atishi, the Returning Officer, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and the Delhi Police in the matter.

The rupee depreciated by 6 paise, reaching 85.78 against the US dollar during early trading on Wednesday. This decline was driven by a negative trend in domestic equities and the strengthening of the US dollar in global markets.
