Kolkata’s Iconic College Street Set For London's Oxford Street-Style Revamp; Minister Agnimitra Paul Plans 'No Vehicle Zone'

Kolkata: The West Bengal government has proposed converting a stretch of the city’s historic College Street into a vehicle-free heritage book district, drawing inspiration from London’s Oxford Street, according to reports. The project aims to preserve the area’s literary legacy while creating a modern public space focused on books and culture.

State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul plans for a no-vehicle zone at a designated section of the iconic College Street, which is also sometimes known as Asia's largest book market. Cycle stands would be set up nearby to encourage bicycle use, while battery-operated vehicles would be provided for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Additional features under consideration include heritage-style trams, uniformly designed bookshops, vintage lamp posts, public benches, free Wi-Fi and dedicated reading spaces.

Paul emphasised the goal of reviving reading habits, particularly among younger people increasingly drawn to mobile phones and digital platforms. As per reports, she said, that there is no substitute for books and the government wants to create public spaces that inspire people, especially the younger generation, to return to reading. She has directed the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority to assess feasibility and prepare a plan, expressing hope that the project could materialise by the end of the year if it receives public support.

A similar reading and recreational zone is reportedly also proposed for Asansol, along the Damodar riverfront between Bhutaberia and Chhat Ghat in Asansol South. Both initiatives form part of the state’s wider effort to develop public cultural spaces while safeguarding heritage landmarks. No detailed implementation roadmap or firm timeline has been announced yet.
