New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is set to face an official investigation as Maharashtra’s junior home minister, Yogesh Kadam, announced in the Legislative Council on Monday that his call detail records (CDR) and bank statements will be scrutinized.
Speaking in the state assembly, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said, “Call recordings along with CDRs, as well as bank statements of comedian Kunal Kamra, will also be checked. We will find out who is behind this.”
The announcement comes after Kamra reportedly referred to Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) during his performance. The Maharashtra government has taken serious note of the remarks, leading to calls for an investigation into who funded and organized the event.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam alleged that the rival Uddhav Sena financed Kamra’s show and accused the comedian of making “low-level” comments.
“People are searching for him, but we have come to know that he is not in Mumbai and has probably fled from here. We will not leave him until he apologizes,” Nirupam stated.
He further claimed that the funds for the show’s venue booking came from Matoshree, the residence of Uddhav Thackeray. “That is why Eknath Shinde Sahab has been targeted,” Nirupam alleged.
During his stand-up show, Kunal Kamra parodied a popular Hindi song from Dil To Pagal Hai while referring to Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde as a "gaddar" (traitor). He also took a dig at Maharashtra’s recent political turmoil, highlighting the internal divisions within Shiv Sena and the NCP.
"First, Shiv Sena broke away from the BJP, then Shiv Sena split within itself. The NCP also fractured, and they handed nine buttons to a single voter… leaving everyone confused," Kamra quipped.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanded an apology from Kamra for insulting Eknath Shinde. Mumbai police, on the other hand, arrested 12 workers from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena for vandalizing the venue where Kamra made the “traitor” remark.
A local court later granted bail to Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others.
Condemning Kamra’s comments, Fadnavis warned that “urban Naxals” and “Left liberals” who support such acts will be “taught a lesson.”
Mumbai police have registered an FIR against Kamra for making defamatory remarks against Shinde. Additionally, a case has been filed against 40 Shiv Sena workers for ransacking the Habitat Studio in Khar, where Kamra’s show was recorded, as well as the hotel housing the venue.
