A private school in Shimla has sparked controversy after issuing an order in a parents’ WhatsApp group, instructing students to follow a specific dress code for Eid celebrations. The school directed children to wear a kurta-pyjama and a cap on 31st March, the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. Additionally, students were asked to bring sweets in their tiffin for the occasion.
Parents received a WhatsApp message stating, "Dear Parents, for the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration on 28.03.25, the dress code will be any kurta-pyjama with a small cap. The lunchbox should include a roti roll with paneer, sevaiya, and dry fruits."
This message has led to mixed reactions, with some parents expressing concerns over the nature of the instructions.
The issue has escalated, with Hindu leaders launching a campaign against the school on social media. The Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti has strongly opposed the directive, calling it a violation of India’s secular principles.
Bharat Bhushan, the convener of Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, said that also against the principle of secularism of the Constitution. The school was given a warning that if the order is not withdrawn, they will protest outside the school and initiate legal action against it.
The Principal of Auckland House School, Shimla, issued an official statement addressing the issue. The WhatsApp notice stated:
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. The planned Eid-ul-Fitr celebration for Nursery to Class 2 was part of our effort to help young children appreciate India's cultural diversity, just as we celebrate Holi , Diwali , and Christmas at school."
The school further clarified that the event was intended as a cultural learning experience, without any religious ritual or enforcement, and participation was completely voluntary.
The WhatsApp notice stated, “However, due to misinterpretation of the event and concerns over potential disruptions, the school has decided to cancel the celebration in the interest of maintaining a peaceful and secure environment. Students have been instructed to attend school in their regular uniform as usual.”
