New Delhi: The legal fraternity was left in a state of shock following the revelation of a disturbing video showing piles of burned cash at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting Delhi High Court judge. This footage, which surfaced late on Saturday night, provides a shocking visual confirmation of the large sums of unaccounted money found at the judge’s home after a fire incident on March 14, during the Holi weekend.
Senior Advocate Satish Maneshinde voiced his disbelief: "The legal community is in shock. The video of the burned cash speaks for itself. There is no need for further proof; the case is clear. If I were in the Chief Justice's position, I would immediately call for the CBI to take over the investigation to prevent any more destruction or tampering of evidence. We've seen conflicting versions from the fire department, and there are clear attempts to shield the case from further scrutiny. This incident has opened a Pandora's box."
"The presence of such large amounts of unaccounted money in a judge’s home during a fire is a matter of grave concern. No more investigation is necessary at this point—what we need now is a transparent and rigorous inquiry," he added.
Advocate Harsh Dahiya was equally outraged. "One thing is clear: the public’s trust in the judiciary has eroded to such an extent that rebuilding that trust will be an incredibly difficult task. The scale of the cash found and the shocking video footage demand a clear inquiry. It's laughable that the judge claimed that part of his house was only accessible to servants—this is an attempt to deflect responsibility,”he said.
Raghav Awasthi, another lawyer pointed out the implausibility of the judge’s explanations "Now that the visuals have come out, it’s clear that a lot has been hidden. The judge's earlier claim that no one would be ‘stupid enough’ to hide cash in an accessible room does not sound convincing. To suggest that such a massive sum—around 15 crore—was planted seems highly unlikely. This matter requires a much deeper investigation,” he said
