Jadavpur University Violence: Police Launch Probe After Calcutta HC Order, Record Statements of Injured Student and TMC Leader

Republic Bangla reporter Pinki was detained at Jadavpur University while covering protests, highlighting a concerning disregard for press freedom by the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government.

Reporter confirmed she was detained inside the registrar's office and pressured to delete her footage. "We are inside the registrar's room. They asked us to delete the video. This is Aurobindo Bhawan, an open space. What are they scared of?" she said during her report from the university.

Another Republic Bangla reporter, Bhaskar, was also locked inside the registrar's office while fulfilling his journalistic duties.

In a separate incident, reporter Hridita was chased off campus by an aggressive crowd during a live broadcast. However, she returned to confront those responsible, undeterred in her commitment to report the truth.

‘These Student Unions Are the Real Dalals’ says Arnab

Detailing the attack on Republic Bangla’s team, Arnab stated that male students had physically assaulted female reporters Hridita and Pinky.

Hridita and Pinki were simply reporting when they were confronted, physically assaulted, and then illegally detained by the Jadavpur University registrar in his office. Despite this, there was no police protection," he said.

‘These Student Unions Are the Real Dalals’
"These students have gone all out in an act of complete hooliganism and gundaism against Republic Bangla’s reporting team. They call us 'dalals' (agents), but the truth is that these student unions are the real dalals—serving foreign interests and imperialist forces while pretending to fight against them," he said.

Criminal assault on media freedom, yet Mamata remains mum

The incident raises serious concerns about the state of media freedom in West Bengal, where journalists critical of the ruling dispensation face threats, intimidation, and, in many cases, physical harassment. Under Mamata Banerjee’s government, there has been a pattern of curbing journalistic freedom, especially when it comes to platforms that challenge the ruling Trinamool Congress narrative.
