Chennai on Alert With Heavy Rain Warning: Schools, Colleges Shut, WFH for IT Employees

Chennai Rain Update: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15, today, due to an imminent spell of heavy rain forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The met office predicts significant rainfall over the next four days in these districts, prompting the government to take precautionary measures.

In addition to the school closures, Stalin has directed IT companies in the affected districts to allow their employees to work from home from October 15 to 18. This advisory aims to reduce travel risks and ensure public safety during the severe weather.

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin conducted an inspection of the integrated Control and Command Centre in Chennai.
Disaster Preparedness in Full Swing
The Chief Minister has also taken steps to deploy both the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force in flood-prone areas. “Rescue boats should be deployed in vulnerable regions today itself,” Stalin said in an official statement. He urged district monitoring officers to coordinate with local administrations to prepare for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Meanwhile, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami urged Chennai residents to stock up on essential supplies such as drinking water and food, warning them not to rely solely on the DMK government for assistance during the rains.
