Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Orders Probe into Attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal at Nanded Gurdwara

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed an investigation into the motive behind Thursday’s attack on former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal at a gurdwara in Nanded.

As per reports, Fadnavis spoke to the Nanded Police Superintendent and took stock of the attack on former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. 

Badal was assaulted at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur while visiting with family members to offer prayers. Reports said that a Nihang allegedly attacked him with a kirpan following an argument. Badal sustained an injury to his arm and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His personal security officer was also hurt in the incident.

Sources confirmed that Badal had been in Nanded since Wednesday. His wife, Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and two to three other family members were present at the site when the attack occurred.

The incident marks the second major security scare for Badal in under two years. In December 2024, he survived an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where a gunman opened fire while Badal was performing religious penance. Security personnel intervened, and he escaped unharmed.

The latest assault has renewed concerns over the security arrangements for the SAD chief, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Details about the attacker’s identity, the precise sequence of events, and Badal’s current medical condition are still awaited.
