London: West Bengal Chief Minister, who visited the Kellogg college at Oxford University in UK to deliver a lecture, lost her cool after she was confronted with pointed questions on Tata, Development, Hindus or RK Kar rape and murder case, midway during the seminar on March 27. The incident took place when Mamata Banerjee was delivering her speech at Kellogg College on “Social Development - Girl Child, Women Empowerment”.

Mamata Banerjee spoke at the Kellogg college for over an hour on Thursday but almost 33 minutes into her speech, pointed questions were raised by a section of audience, who asked her about Tatas as to why did they leave her state. They confronted her on what she has done for Hindus and also about the RG Kar rape and murder case.

  1. Surprised and visibly anguished, Mamata Banerjee responded to these questions but accused the audience of being politically motivated and spreading lies. While discussing investment proposals in West Bengal, she was interrupted by an audience member who asked her to provide specific names instead of citing large figures about investment proposals.
  2. Mamata responded by mentioning companies such as IBM, Tata, Infotech, Wipro , and other economic corridors. However, when she started naming companies, another audience member questioned her, asking, “Why did Tata leave your state?” Mamata Banerjee refuted the claim, stating it was incorrect, but the audience accused her of lying. She insisted she was not lying and urged the member  to listen carefully.
  3. She elaborated that Cognizant and Tata had set up industries in Kharagpur and Rajarhat, emphasising that no sector was left out.
  4. The Chief Minister was then questioned about the RG Kar rape and murder case. She responded by stating that the case was sub-judice and had been taken over by the Central government. She accused the audience of attempting to politicise the platform, saying, “I can’t hear. Speak more loudly, please. I don’t mind. Please raise your voice, it’s a democracy. Please raise your voice. I’ll listen carefully. You know the case is sub-judice, and now that the Central government has taken over, it’s not with us.”
  5. She urged the audience not to indulge in politics, adding, “Please don’t do politics here. It’s not a political stage. You can do that with me in my state, not here. You know better than me about crowdfunding and all.”
  6. When someone from the crowd accused her ministers of threatening to break their fingers when questioned in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee once again accused them of lying. She tried to console the audience, saying, “This is absolutely wrong. You are lying, brother. Don’t do it, brother… Don’t do it. I have a special affection for you. We love all of you. Don’t try to make this a political platform. If you want to, go to Bengal and tell your party to be stronger. Get the strength to fight against communal people. Don’t fight with me.”
  7. Mamata Banerjee was also questioned about what she has done for Hindus. She responded by stating that she stood for everyone—Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians—emphasising she stood for unity.
  8. She warned the audience that similar behavior could be repeated when their leaders visit, saying, “Please remember this… and don’t do politics. It’s very easy to do politics here and create negative narratives.”
  9. Despite the confrontations, Mamata Banerjee expressed her intention to visit the university twice a year to address the people, as she felt inspired and encouraged by them.
  10. Towards the end of the altercation, Mamata Banerjee boasted her own conduct saying she was like a Royal Bengal Tiger and challenged the audience if they can catch her only then fight her.
