Massive Fire Breaks Out at Mafia-Don Atiq Ahmed's Office in Prayagraj

Prayagraj: A massive fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at the Prayagraj office of mafia-don turned politician Atiq Ahmed, officials said.

According to the officials, the incident occurred during the noon time on Saturday, and the cause of the fire is not yet clear.

A firefighting operation was conducted and the blaze has been brought under control.

The fire incident took place at Atiq Ahmed's Kasari Masari office in Prayagraj.

The Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) had earlier demolished six properties owned by gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, including his house and office, since September 2020.

Two of these buildings had been constructed on government land, officials said.

Taking advantage of the volatile political environment in the State during the 1990s and early 2000s, with no Chief Minister completing their terms and President’s rule being imposed thrice, Ahmed formed a syndicate that allegedly indulged in extortion and land grabbing.

In 1989, he entered politics and won from the Allahabad West constituency as an Independent candidate. He went on to retain the seat in 1991 and 1993. Three years later, he contested the seat on a Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket and succeeded again.

He later joined the Apna Dal and was made its State president. He wrested the seat in 2002.
